Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park is one of Gainesville's most unique natural areas — a 21,000-acre prairie basin that's home to wild horses, bison, alligators, and over 270 species of birds.

The La Chua Trail

The La Chua Trail is a 3-mile out-and-back trail that takes you from the Prairie visitor center out to an observation platform overlooking the basin. The first section is a paved/boardwalk path suitable for all bikes, transitioning to a gravel path.

Wildlife Watching

This is one of the best places in Florida to see wildlife from your bike. Wild horses roam the prairie, American bison graze in the distance, and alligators are commonly spotted along the waterways. Always maintain a safe distance — at least 15 feet from alligators.

Practical Info

The park entrance is at 100 Savannah Blvd, Micanopy, FL 32667. Entrance fee is $6 per vehicle. The trail is open 8am to sunset. Bring water and sunscreen — there is very little shade on the prairie.
