The Gainesville-Hawthorne State Trail is a 16.2-mile paved rail-trail that ranks among Florida's finest cycling experiences. Built on a historic railway corridor, it connects downtown Gainesville to the small town of Hawthorne.

Trail Highlights

The trail passes through beautiful oak forests with Spanish moss, alongside wetlands, and near Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park. Wildlife sightings are common — keep an eye out for deer, wild turkeys, and even the occasional alligator near water crossings.

Trail Access Points

The main trailhead is at Boulware Springs Park (3309 SE 15th St), which offers parking, water, and restrooms. You can also access the trail from Depot Park in downtown Gainesville.

Tips for Riding

The trail is fully paved and suitable for all bike types. Bring extra water — Florida heat can be intense, even in shade. Early morning rides offer the best experience with cooler temperatures and beautiful light filtering through the oak canopy.
