Riding your first century (100 miles) is a milestone for any cyclist. North Florida's flat terrain makes it an ideal place to train, with scenic routes through oak-canopied roads and rural countryside.

The 12-Week Plan

Start with a base of being able to ride 30 miles comfortably. Week 1-4: Build to 50-mile rides on weekends. Week 5-8: Progress to 65-75 miles. Week 9-11: Complete 80-90 mile rides. Week 12: Taper and ride your century.

Route Recommendations

The Gainesville-Hawthorne Trail out-and-back gives you 32 miles. Combine with rural roads in Alachua County for a 50+ mile loop. The flat terrain around Paynes Prairie and Newnans Lake offers scenic century routes.

Nutrition and Hydration

Aim for 200-300 calories per hour of riding. Drink 20-24 oz of water per hour, more in summer heat. Practice eating on the bike during training rides to find what works for your stomach.
